How often should you really visit the dentist?

Six months is the rule of thumb — but the right interval depends on you. Here’s how we decide.

Most people have heard that they should see the dentist every six months. For many adults that’s a sensible default, but it isn’t a rule written in stone.

What decides your interval

  • Your history of decay and gum disease

  • How well you can clean at home

  • Smoking, diet and some medications

  • Treatments that need monitoring, such as implants

Our approach

After your first examination we’ll recommend a recall interval that fits your risk — anywhere from three to eighteen months — and review it at every visit.
